This is what you need to know about Split Sleeper Berth Rule!

As ELD mandate states that it is a compulsion to record Sleeping Berth time for all the CMV drivers so that a safer driving environment can be established. However, due to an amendment in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) guidelines of Split sleeper birth provision, managing the Hours of Service for drivers has become quite complex. Now the drivers can expand their on duty timings by dividing the requisite 10 consequential hours of their OFF duty time which definitely has a huge impact on the HOS guidelines. However, this new rule provides the CMV drivers more flexibility to operate and does not impact the automated process much as the Hours of service will be done on the manual front. Here are a few things everyone should know about this new declaration.

According to the new rule, the drivers can split their sleeping berth time to increase their efficiency on road. In many practical scenarios, the Sleeper berth rule may cause a lot of problems as the driver has to take mandatory 10 hours off duty break before their clock cycle resets and they can drive again. Therefore, in case the driver is stuck at a docking status or warehouse then he might have to wait for 10 hours until he could start driving again. Hence, with the new split sleeper berth rule, now the drivers can split their off duty time to increase their efficiency on road.

Now with this rule, the drivers can also take rests in 14 hour long driving window as they can now extend their on duty shifts by splitting their off duty hours into two different shift. This may also solve their problems of being stuck at a station because there duty hours are over and save them from HOS violations as well.
