A Complete guide to Canadian ELD mandate

After much anticipation on June 13, 2019, the Canadian Minister of Transport Marc Garneau announced that it would be a compulsion for all commercial vehicle operators such as truck, bus drivers etc to use electronic devices(ELD) to capture and log information complying to the predefined mandates. This ELD mandate will come into effect by June 12, 2021.

Here are a few of the key factors which will ensure your fleet is totally in compliance with the regulations before the effective date.

What exactly is Canadian ELD mandate?

According to the Canadian ELD mandate, every commercial vehicle on the road will be using electronic devices to log their hours of service instead of the conventional paper logs which is pretty similar to the US mandate or FMCSA. This automation was brought in to place to increase a driver's safety on road. The automatic tracking of his work hours, road safety rules violations, harsh drivings etc has made the overall process super quick and saves millions of dollars spent on maintaining paper logs.

Now Let's have a look at the US ELD mandate (FMCSA)

FMCSA federal law stresses on the use of ELD devices for commercial vehicles to increase road safety standards and battle with the number of increasing accidents. The US announced adoption of a Final Rule that will increase road safety with the use of latest technology to facilitate safe environment for drivers. Although both the versions are similar but the Canadian one is more advanced in terms of safety, rules and regulations which can also cause frustration to the US drivers.

Electronic Logging Device(ELD)

ELD refers to a handheld device which is used by commercial motor vehicles(CMV) to streamline their driving experience with the help of technology which is pretty similar to
a person assisted by a computer to follow road safety regulations and drive efficiently. Not only they record and track a driver's hours of service, engine efficiency, feul, routes, temperature as well as different other IOT devices attached but also minimizes the cost to be spent on paper logs, fatal accidents, exon oration, proofs etc. ELDs generates different reports which can be used by inspection, investigating officers and other users to evaluate various scenarios without subjecting to errors and compliance issues. Thus, usage of ELDs have many life of many people easier.
